Economically, enlargement has helped to increase prosperity and competitiveness, enabling the enlarged Union to respond better to the challenges of globalisation. This has brought direct benefits for Europe as a whole.
Enlargement has shown its enduring value as one of the EU's most effective policies, successfully contributing to peace, stability and democratic development throughout the continent. Ten new members joined the EU in 2004, producing the biggest wave of EU enlargement, and this was followed by the accession of Bulgaria and Romania in January 2007. The ten new Member States have continued their smooth integration into EU institutions and policies; they have an excellent level of compliance with EU law and have made significant contributions to the work of the EU's institutions. The EU's institutions have continued to function effectively.
