The Roman Empire and Christianity dominated the organization of political life and neither had much use for the term. Europe re-emerged as an important political idea from the eighth century onwards.44 Alongside particular religious beliefs, Europe also became associated with a particular form of political economy, namely rural trade. Increasingly, the rural town became the centre of the local economy.
