Los primeros estudios realizados en meconio demostraron que las sustancias de abuso y sus metabolitos principales están presentes en dicha matriz. Sin embargo, mediante investigaciones posteriores realizadas con metodologías más sensibles y específicas se reveló que los metabolitos principales de las sustancias de abuso suelen hallarse de forma predominante o incluso en muchos casos de forma única en esta matriz biológica, así pues para la COC, no es extraño detectar los metabolitos m- y phidroxibenzoilecgonina (OH-BE) en detrimento de la droga principal (Pichini et al., 2005a) o para el caso del cannabis, se obtiene la máxima abundancia representada por el 11-hidroxi-Δ9-tetrahidrocannabinol (THCOH) (ElSohly and Feng, 1998). Early studies demonstrated that parent drugs and their principal metabolites are both present in meconium. However, subsequent investigations with more specific and sensitive techniques revealed that particular metabolites can be present only (or mainly) in this biological matrix, such as m-hydroxybenzoylecgonine and p-hydroxybenzoylecgonine in case of COC and 11-hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-OH) in case of cannabis.27–30
